So, you're in the mood for authentic Mexican grub but you want to pay authentic Mexican street food prices. Solution? Acapulco's Taqueria!
This Tampa gem is kind of hidden in a strip center north on Kennedy on MacDill Ave. On my recent lunch-time visit it was packed with working folks. The parking lot stuffed with work trucks grabbing some lunch hour food and somehow I knew this was the real deal.
On the premise of authenticity and being an adventurous eater, I start with an order of Lingua (beef tongue) Tacos ($2.25). They are in a soft taco shell with onions and cilantro. The meat is firm and spongy (bite your own tongue with your rear teeth- yeah, like that), with a slightly beefy taste. It being a traditional Mexican dish make sense- given the economic conditions in some rural Mexican neighborhoods. So, I get it.
If you go, make sure to ask about specials-like the chicken tamales that weren't on the menu but delicious! It was the best dish I had on this visit.
Next, on to Tacos Dorados - chicken tacos in a fried tortilla with beans lettuce cream cojita avocado and tomato. Again, authentic taco. The chicken is mild without a lot of flavor and the cojita cheese helps. Add a little of the optional salsa verde served with the meal, stack up the avocado and other veggies, and its a great bite.
Even when busy the service is snappy. Uniquely, they don't give you a check at the end of the meal. You simply go up to the counter and tell them the table number where you were sitting. That's also where you will find house made desserts like several flavors of flan and delicious Tres Leche cake! The restaurant/market is not so easy to find. It's at the end of the strip center on MacDill Avenue north of Kennedy. Possibly the easiest way to find is look for a parking lot at lunchtime packed with trucks and cars.
