Home made. It's what happens here in this hidden gem on Henderson Blvd. The interior of Healthy and Fresh Cafe has a Mom and Pop feel to it, being a cross between country and industrial. The counter tops are coated in thick polyurethane and the ceiling tinned in corrugated galvanized steel. The look isn't refined but that's not what this place is about.
The menu, developed by a nutritionist according to the manager, is filled with healthy options. It is a mix of breakfast (all day), hot and cold sandwiches, bowls and smoothies, and paninis, soups, and salads. They do things like substitute kale for lettuce on their paninis, use carved turkey (not pressed turkey deli slices), and offer fresh mozzarella just to name a few. It's really good.
Turkey Panini ($7.49) is carved turkey breast, kale, and sun-dried tomatoes. It's then gently press to a golden brown outside, just enough to make the Mozzarella hot and stringy.
The breakfast sandwich on Cuban Bread is made with a fried egg, ham, the same turkey breast as before, and dressed with sweet butter. Yes, I said butter. It's a healthy menu... not an over-the-top strict health freak menu. I think that's why I like it. Moderation is my friend and the sandwich is just that.
On my second visit I order the Strawberry Salad with grilled chicken, strawberries, red and green grapes, sunflower seeds, chickpeas, feta cheese, with orange vinaigrette. The chicken is marinated in vegetables and turmeric and grilled. When the dish arrives it looks like its topped with grilled plantains. It's chicken, beautifully browned and yellow, chopped and placed on top of fresh greens, grapes, and creamy feta cheese. The chickpeas don't mix well with the rest of the blend but are a smart protein addition. Blend them in to hummus and it would be just right!
House made drinks include lemonade and iced tea. Several forms of traditional coffee are available including drip, latte, and cappuccino.
Canned and bottled soft drinks are available. Coke products including Perrier arein the self-serve refrigerator
The staff is super friendly and knowledgeable about health food and nutrition. I even overheard them say to a customer that their order may take a little longer because they are stacked up and asked them if they minded waiting. Integrity goes a long way.
There are two small window booths, three counter seats and four two-top tables making for adequate seating, but might be cramped during bust meal times. They are opened for breakfast and lunch closing at 6 p.m. Craving healthy? Yep, this da place.
