There's a new Giant in South Tampa. Hey Giant little biscuits started serving their small portion delights from their new shop on South Dale Hwy this week. The buttermilk two-bite morsels were perfected in the Seminole Heights store before bringing them to the new location. Owners Jesse Thompson and  Lee Valenti started their food venture as a community based learning center and grew in to serving biscuits and waffles during the day. As the food enterprise gained traction they began doing pop-up events which garnered even more popularity, culminating in opening a second location. The Seminole Heights location continues as a learning center in the evenings.

Co-owner Jesse Thompson, a former full time educator, describes the concept of collaboration with other nearby eateries would work. Sounds like a great idea!
According to co-owner Thompson, one of the ideas for the new place is to collaborate with other restaurants like they do in Seminole Heights. From this writers perspective, how awesome it would be to begin to have a collection of smaller places along the Dale Mabry strip that could be a new center for foodies to compliment areas like Seminole Heights. As eateries like the Deviled Pig a couple of blocks down plan their opening soon, that idea could come to fruition!
These biscuits are different from the everyday variety. They are lighter and flakier than most and better yet, smaller than the standard. Pretty much two bites per biscuit (sold in pairs) is what they offer. It's so much better than the extra large dough heavy disc many place serve.

Hey Giant's version of biscuits and gravy brings a light gravy with a little pop from jalapenos
A true measure of any biscuit house, especially in the South, is their biscuits and gravy. The Giant got this one right. The sausage gravy, spiked with touch of jalapeno, is served open faced and covers the entire bread bed. The saucy mix is thinner than many gravies and works well with the buttery foundation.

Some coffee shops started selling pumpkin influenced drinks in August. August! So, maybe you're all gourded out by now. But do yourself a favor and just try the seasonal house pumpkin biscuit. It's a buttermilk morsel, topped with pumpkin spice and filled with pumpkin butter. It's light and fluffy and perfect for a warm fall day.

Cinnamon Biscuit-buttermilk biscuit with brown sugar and cinnamon center, topped with more cinnamon and sugar
The Cinnamon Biscuit, another buttermilk creation with sugar and cinnamon inside and out, is my kind of breakfast treat. It's light, fluffy and sweet and perfect for pairing with a hot cup of joe. In my perfect world I'd pipe a little cinnamon roll frosting on top for the perfect combo, but I'll take it like this just the same.

Brie's Biscuit is a vegetarian delight, with it's arugula, blueberries, brie, and fresh honey topping.
Hey Giant south is working to refine the current menu with plans to adjust as strong sellers emerge. They will continue to offer seasonal specials as well. On my visit they were out of several main items by early afternoon. But being newly opened, shortages are to be expected i suppose.  There will be differences between the Seminole Heights store and South Tampa. For example, the South Tampa place will offer both brewed and French press coffee whereas the Seminole Heights store only offers the latter. Coffee is exclusively from Zeal Coffee Roasters, a Land O'Lakes based biz. Tea comes from TeBella Tea Co.
Admittedly the pricing structure is odd and takes a minute to navigate. Their classic biscuits (sold in pairs) sell for two for $3, four for $5, six for $7, and twelve for $13.
So, got a yearning for a really good biscuit? This is the place!
