Dough is a South Tampa staple bakery popular with trendy residents here. It's bright and colorful interior is a combination of shabby chic, circus tent, and vintage soda fountain vibe. Inside you'll see striped walls and checkerboard floors accented by 70s/80s pop music in the background. There's a strange menagerie of retail goods like vintage candy, bulk coffee from 2 different suppliers, craft beer, and popcorn. It not typical bakery merchandising. Primarily Dough is a purveyor of house made (yeast) doughnuts and cakes. Their line of doughnuts are creatively topped with trendy flavors like Nutella and bacon, along with neo-popular add-ons such as Oreos and M&Ms. It's a schtick that attracts in-crowd mouths. Dough also offers an assortment of William Dean Macarons (a colorful French cookie type pastry), a variety of cakes, and several ice cream products.
With a website named bestdoughnuts.com they better be good. I found them only mediocre. The base doughnuts- plated on black plastic- are okay. The chocolate topping in amateur and other ingredients used for capping the pastry is lacking. Using pop-culture ingredients is a good marketing idea, but the execution doesn't follow. The coffee, served in paper cups, is barely adequate compared to the outstanding coffee houses in the area. It's crowded most mornings and open until late most evenings. Service is friendly and prices are high.
