Big Ray's Fish Camp grouper sandwich review
Big Ray's Grouper sammie is great. But prepare to wait and bring the credit card!
Big Ray's is a quaint place with rustic charm and very good but expensive food.
According to their website:"Chef Raymond "Nick" Cruz grew up watching and learning about fishing from Grandpa Cruz a few blocks away at  Ballast Point Pier. Spending countless summer days fishing, cleaning, and cooking said "fish on the line," would eventually turn into a personal passion to serve the best and freshest seafood in South Tampa."
The restaurant itself is small, with a few tables (and air conditioning) inside. There is abundant seating outside under shade sails. It is usually fairly crowded so pack some patience if you go. They serve the best Fried Grouper sandwich ($14.00) around. And, I've been around!
Big Ray's fish camp lobster corn dog for Tampa food blog
Lobster corn dog
Do yourself a favor and order it with onion rings. They are big tasty batter fried crispy rings of goodness. On your second trip budget for the lobster corn dog ($23!). The dog is a a couple of chunks of Florida lobster, you guessed it, dipped in corn dog batter and deep fried. Genius! Then throw in some Ray's fries. They are almost as good as the onion rings. They are fried to a golden brown and topped with salt and Parmesan cheese. There's a small beer list, and typical fountain drink selections.
If you go pack some patience and your credit card. On a crowded night you may wait close to an hour for your food, but typically it's worth it. Save up your pennies, have a beer while you wait, and go!
